Avery Jae Clemens – who goes under the name ‘AJ Clementine’ – transitioned from male to female after feeling ‘trapped in a different body’ for 13 years.
AJ underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2018 after spending 18 months on the waiting list.

‘All I can remember is darkness… I wasn’t happy and I thought each day was weighing me down,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.
‘I had no end goal, it was all a dark mentality. I didn’t see a future and I felt like something was going to push me over the edge.
‘I hated every aspect of my life, I think I was just confused. I remember my main focus at the time was trying to survive high school.

‘I had such a great childhood where I was able to express my emotions and do anything. There wasn’t any question and no one questioned me until high school.
‘I was living as a boy until I was 15 – I just didn’t like who I was. I remember at the time, it was dark and I was not happy. It stopped me from being friends with people.’
