According to sale records, Helene purchased the property for a modest $110,000 back in 1986.
She told realestate.com.au the home was ‘derelict’ and uninhabitable when she and her husband bought it, shortly after moving to Melbourne.
The former ABC journalist worked alongside award-winning architect Norman Day to renovate the home.

‘My partner and I wanted to be surrounded by the garden, to virtually live in the garden and he [Day] came up with the idea for the extension,’ she said.
‘It was a rundown four-room place when we bought it. It only had the four rooms and a lean-to of a kitchen and a pig or horse trough.

‘It’s an absolutely wonderful feeling living there because you can go outside and enjoy the garden, but throughout the year, no matter if it’s hot or cold, you can sit in there.’
