The actor, who is currently filming the series in Thailand, will play Dr Richard Harris – one of the two Aussie expert cave divers who helped rescue a Thai soccer team from a flooded cave back in 2018, according to Saturday’s The Daily Telegraph.

Rodger, 48, who is known for his roles in Doctor Doctor, Water Rats and Rush, admitted to the publication that the new role is the most physically demanding.

‘Though I’ve previously done an action-based procedural show (Rush), the physicality of this role is greater than I’ve experienced,’ he explained.

‘Half the shoot is on a massive sound stage in Bangkok in water tanks and the other half around Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand, shooting in monsoonal rain and mud.’

Rodger revealed how he and his co-stars have been learning to dive from a stunt team, with one having been involved in the 2018 rescue.

‘Not only are most of us learning from scratch, we’re learning the elements of the specialised field of cave diving, which has different skills, gear and rules to keep divers safe,’ he said.

Richard risked his life to save 12 young soccer players trapped in a Thailand cave in 2018.

The children, aged between 11 and 17, and their coach, 25, entered the cave on June 23, 2018 after their team practice, but were trapped when heavy rains flooded the cave system.

All 12 children and their coach were saved during the rescue mission after spending more than two weeks in the cave.

Working up to 12 hours a day with a team of military and medial experts, Richard and fellow diver Craig Challen repeatedly risked their lives in the operation.

Richard, who is an anaesthetist, had the job of sedating the boys before they were ushered through the caves by expert divers.

Both he and Craig were named joint Australians Of The Year in 2019.

In a recorded message played to the audience on a TV screen at the time, the Thai boys thanked the pair for saving their lives, saying ‘we love you, all the best.’

Richard said after the message: ‘That’s the first contact we’ve had with the boys so thank you for that.’

Craig added: ‘There are 13 families that still have their sons. That’s what floats my boat.’

The panel noted the pair showed ‘selflessness, courage and willingness to help others’.
