Adam Peaty was left 'angry' at Boris Johnson over lockdown rules

Adam Peaty has continued his long spell of dominance in the world of swimming, winning yet another Olympic gold in Tokyo yesterday. His victory represented Team GB’s first top prize at the 2020 Olympic Games, which had been postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Peaty said he hoped his victory would inspire people in Great Britain to “change their mindsets” and recover from the “tough” time the pandemic has caused.

He said: “That’s why we are all here, because sport has an amazing power to inspire people and hopefully this is going to be an amazing motivation for people.

“Hopefully, this is a catalyst for not only Team GB but also the people back home to go to another gear, to say: ‘We’ve been through a tough time, there’s been a lot of complaining, a lot of excuses, a lot of negative things, but now we’ve got to switch our mindset.’”

The global health crisis has affected many athletes’ training programmes ahead of the Olympic games, and Peaty was one of many left angry as a result.

In June last year, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson prepared to lift some restrictions, he came under fire from Peaty for not reopening swimming pools – the Olympian said he was “angry”.

Peaty told BBC Sport: “People will talk about how much the pubs bring in [to the economy] in terms of tax, but you also have to think about the health benefits that swimming provides.

“With mental health concerns on the increase we’re in a dangerous position and there’s a risk that if the pubs are open but they can’t exercise then people will choose the pub each day and have no balance.”

The multi world record breaker called on the Government to support young people in taking up the sport.

He added: “Some venues struggle to make money and are at risk of permanent closure. Then you have kids who haven’t swum now in 15-16 weeks who may turn to other sports.

“If we’re not careful we’ll see a downturn in participation just before the Tokyo Olympics which is extremely wrong.”

In July 2019, he tweeted: “I have no idea what’s going on with Brexit anymore, surely I can’t be the only one.”

At the time, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was preparing to take over from Theresa May.

She had failed to get a withdrawal agreement through Parliament, and was therefore forced to step down.

Another Team GB legend replied to Peaty’s tweet with a similar sentiment.

Dame Kelly Homes replied: “Agree…what the hell is going on.”
