Amber watch list: Summer holidays in Spain, France and Italy 'thrown into doubt'

Summer getaways to Spain, France and Italy may be among the list of affected destinations, it has been suggested. Ministers agreed in principle new Covid-rules for British holidaymakers that could see amber listed countries jump straight into the red tier, The Daily Mail claims. Change to Covid rules would mean Brits trying to make the most of the continental weather forced into compulsory hotel quarantine upon arriving back in the UK.

This will add a cost of £1,750 per adult traveller, the report suggests.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told Britons to “ignore speculation” regarding the change to quarantine rules.

But one source in Whitehall was more concerned.

They told The Mail: “If you have already booked to go there you are going to spend your whole holiday worrying whether you are going to have to make a dash to the airport to get home.”

The possible change in travel rules comes weeks after the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, Operational sub-group, expressed concern over an increase in overseas travel.

They said: “Any increase in foreign travel over the summer and the return of international students to universities in the autumn is of particular concern.”

The Mail report claimed ministers had discussed including Italy and Spain in the new category and added it could be enforced as early as next week.

Italy recently extended their quarantine rules on British travellers.

In comparison, the UK recently averaged 376.5 cases per 100,000 over a seven-day period.

In 2019, more than 18 million trips were made to Spain by Brits, with just over five million visits being made by UK citizens to Italy.

Speculation suggests declining Beta variant cases in Spain could see it dodge the quarantine list.

A report by The Telegraph revealed the number of Beta variant cases has dipped across Spain and that there are currently no cases of the South African strain on the Balearic Islands.
