Anthony Joshua warned against taking Deontay Wilder fight and given alternative plan

Simon Jordan believes Anthony Joshua should avoid the Deontay Wilder fight for as long as possible. The ex-Crystal Palace owner would rather AJ built himself up against lesser opposition before jumping into the blockbuster showdown.

Promoter Eddie Hearn recently revealed that he has begun discussing the possibility of making Joshua vs Wilder with The Bronze Bomber’s manager Shelly Finkel. In August, Hearn sent Finkel a ‘big money offer’ over email but received no response.

At the time, Wilder was already booked in to face Robert Helenius and Finkel affirmed that he didn’t want to complicate the situation by negotiating with Hearn.

Finkel did, however, mention that he would consider the offer after the fight’s conclusion. True to his word, Finkel wrote back to Hearn earlier this week enquiring about the financial side of the offer.

Joshua is set to return to the ring between February and April next year after negotiations broke down to stage the long-awaited grudge match with Tyson Fury on December 3. Many were extremely disappointed by the collapse, but Jordan would rather AJ took a few ‘tick-over fights’ before jumping back into the deep end.

He added: “We may have wanted this situation with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, but it certainly wasn’t right for Anthony Joshua. Because it was at a time when you saw the emotional meltdown.

“We were critical of it after the fight against Oleksandr Usyk, you saw the challenges that he had, he needed an opportunity to regain some ground.

“I actually think there’s nothing wrong with him having a couple of tick-over fights to get him back to his very best. We want to see the best version of Anthony Joshua be available to fight the best version of, ideally, Tyson Fury.”
