Anti-ageing skincare products actually make Todd Sampson’s skin three years OLDER on documentary Mirror Mirror

An anti-ageing cream had a very unexpected effect on Todd Sampson during the production of his two part documentary, Mirror Mirror.

The 51-year-old host spent six weeks religiously using one of the most popular products on the market, only for it to add years to the ‘age’ of his skin.

‘I aged three years in one month!’ exclaimed Todd after his skin was deemed to be that of a 54-year-old.

Sampson had his skin assessed by a dermatologist before beginning the experiment, at which point it matched his actual age.

But after six weeks of using the expensive cream, the high tech Visia machine determined the former ad man’s skin was worse in the key areas of wrinkles, pores and redness.

Todd instantly knew something was wrong during the test, exclaiming ‘That looks like it’s worse. Am I worse?’

Explaining how the beauty industry can get away with not delivering on what they promise, Sampson said companies will use ‘weasel words’ in their marketing.

Reading the packaging of the cream he had used, he said ‘The two major claims that they make? Fight 100% of ageing signs and to help correct wrinkles.’

‘Now, ‘help’ and ‘fight’ are what we refer to as weasel words because they’re devoid of meaning,’ he explained.

‘And more importantly, they’re devoid of measurement.’

The exploration of body image and its use for profit is something Sampson openly professes to have played a part in after his 15-year career in advertising.

He now wants to ‘pull the mask off’ to see those negative effects and what happens behind the scenes in the world of cosmetic surgery and body dissatisfaction.

The special also looks at how pornography ties in with those issues, with Todd interviewing Married At First Sight star Hayley Vernon about her move to OnlyFans.

Mirror Mirror is Sampson’s first production under his own company Baltimore Films.

Mirror Mirror concludes Thursday at 7:30pm on Channel 10
