Bert's Newton's friend Susie Elelmen says wife Patti is 'shattered' ahead of the state funeral

Bert Newton’s best friend and former co-star Susie Elelmen spoke of his wife Patti Newton’s raw grief ahead of TV icon’s state funeral on Friday.

Elelman, who appeared on Good Morning Australia with Bert for years, said Patti is absolutely ‘shattered’ and her ‘heart is broken’. 

Appearing on the Today show, Karl Stefanovic asked Elelman how Patti was holding up.

‘Understandably, she is shattered,’ the TV presenter said. 

‘She said to me her heart has broken, but Bert is now at peace.’ 

Fellow Today show host Allison Langdon said that there was ‘no Bert without Patti’ and described the couple as a ‘team’ throughout their 46-year marriage.

‘To hear Patti saying: ‘I find myself thinking, I hope I told him how fabulous he was,’ that was her quote in the paper in this morning. He knew that, didn’t he?’ 

‘That was no one more important in his life than Patti,’ Allison said.

Elelman said the Today co-host was ‘absolutely spot on’. 

She explained that when she previously worked with the TV icon over two different networks Patti was ‘very much apart of the show as well’.

‘Understandably, she is shattered,’ the TV presenter said.  ‘She said to me her heart has broken, but Bert is now at peace’

Elelmen reflected on how the couple would often perform together at work and says you could see just how much ‘they adored each other’.

‘There wasn’t just love on one side, it was certainly a two-way street,’ she added.

Bert passed away almost two weeks ago while in palliative care at a Melbourne hospital after a long health battle. He was 83.
