The SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford called on Boris Johnson to fund tidal energy in the north of Scotland under a new green promise. Mr Blackford asked: “People across Scotland are looking for answers today and they are getting none. All they see is yet another Tory broken promise. It’s bad enough that this UK Government is holding back.

“Across the board, they are proving an active barrier to renewable energy opportunities.

“Tidal stream energy has the potential to generate 20 percent of UK generation capacity. Exactly the same as nuclear.

“All this industry needs is a ring-fence budget of £71million, a drop in the ocean compared to the £23billion that this Government is throwing at the nuclear plants.

“But the UK Government are failing to give support, threatening projects in the north of Scotland.

“At the very least Prime Minister, stand up today and guarantee a ring-fence budget for tidal stream energy and save this renewable energy from being lost overseas.”

Mr Johnson hit back: “I congratulate the right Honourable Gentleman on raising Tidal. I’ve seen the amazing projects that are underway and we are certainly looking at it.

“We are putting huge sums which I think the house can acknowledge into clean, green energy.

“He’s far too gloomy about the prospects in Aberdeen. I think he needs to seeded with an unaccustomed spirit of optimism.”
