New checks are due to take effect from October 1, having already been delayed by six months.

However according to PoliticsHome ministers are considering a second delay, fearing the additional checks could further disrupt the supply of goods.

Companies are already facing shortages of some products as a result of low delivery driver numbers.

The coronavirus pandemic, Brexit and furlough have been blamed for the shortage of workers.

Leo Varadkar, the Irish Tánaiste, told journalists he expects Britain to delay import controls on EU goods following a meeting with Michael Gove in London.

The Irish premier commented: “The expectation is that the United Kingdom will announce a further extension of the grace periods, not just in relation to Northern Ireland but also imports from the EU and Ireland into the UK.”

Speaking to PoliticsHome, an insider said Mr Varadkar left the meeting with “the definite sense” Britain is planning to delay controls again.

One industry source told the publication pushing ahead with full controls from October 1 would be “lunacy”.

However, Downing Street insists no change in policy has been decided.

A spokesperson said: “Our position remains that businesses should continue to prepare for import checks in October and January.”

The UK has already announced another delay to some checks on trade, between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

A number of new measures were due to take effect at the end of September, as a grace period expired, but this has been postponed indefinitly.

Brexit Minister Lord Frost claimed this was to “provide space for further potential discussions” with Brussels.
