He has warned the new petrol “will attract water” which can do a “number of things” to vehicles. However, he warned there was a “lot of scare stories” and warned drivers not to panic too much.

“Then water in your fuel will separate out, the lighter fuel on top and the water will sit on the bottom of the fuel tank and start rotting through.

“If that is in fact the case that could very simply account for some rotting fuel tanks.”

Classic car experts at Hagerty have previously warned around 600,000 cars could be incompatible with the new petrol.

They have previously warned the petrol could “damage” these incompatible vehicles.
