He began: ‘Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement, it really means a lot to hear. Especially from people who have gone through similar things in life.

‘I never thought my actions would mean so much to so many people. In the same way I never thought I would get this far in life. That’s exactly what pushed me to do it.’

He continued: ‘After being told and shown that I would not be able to achieve anything of significance I started to believe it but one emotion kept me going, spite.

‘The drive to spite all that told me I would fail but most importantly to spite myself. I will keep on improving and achieving things that I never thought I would be able to, to spite the past version of myself that never thought I could.

‘If you doubt yourself then just imagine the satisfaction of proving everyone, and yourself, wrong. Because I will tell you right now, it is very satisfying.’

The post came after Carol took to her Twitter platform on the weekend to congratulate her son on his results.

In a series of tweets, the Welsh star detailed Cameron’s achievements whilst noting his ‘different’ development curve.

Starting her tribute with some throwback snaps, the former Countdown presenter wrote: ‘A STORY OF CELEBRATION. My son Cameron was a happy toddler. Before and after he started school it became clear that he had SEVERE SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.

‘No school would accept him. I was going to give up work to teach him but even I couldn’t teach a child with his needs.’

Hugs: Carol gave her followers an insight into the close relationship they share in a slew of mother-and-son shots

From there, Carol gave her followers an insight into the close relationship they share in a slew of mother-and-son shots, alongside the words: ‘Cam went to a “special school” for 5 yrs where they specialised in teaching children like him.

‘Then he changed school to mainstream age 10 but still had additional specialist help. I knew he was super bright but that his development curve would be a different shape to”normal”‘.

Carol’s pride was even further reinforced, as she informed her fans that through Cameron’s endless bullying, a changed school and his developmental strategies to learn, he got a first class degree in animation from University of the West of England Bristol, as well as his recent Master’s.

The star, who rose to fame in 1982 when she joined gameshow Countdown, went so far as explaining her son’s ‘different’ development curve in a graph – claiming that the mainstream system ‘doesn’t cater well’ for those children with learning difficulties.

In the fifth instalment of her proud tweets, Carol recorded a sentimental video.

‘I couldn’t be more proud of him and I love him to bits,’ she said. ‘I’m also a very proud mum cos I know just how much he’s struggled to get there.

‘I suppose the message really is that for all those with special educational needs, their curve is different, just sometimes takes a little bit more time, but they can get there in the end.’
