Channel Ten’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup suffers abysmal ratings for a THIRD year in a row

Channel Ten’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup has suffered abysmal ratings for a third year in a row.

Commentating lead by Michael Felgate, Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne and Caty Price and British racing expert Francesca Cumani, who was live from London, failed to entice punters.

The annual horse racing event drew in just 1.21million viewers across the five city metro, TV Tonight reported on Wednesday.

The Fashions on The Field and entertainment reporting by Rob Mills and Kate Freebairn also didn’t draw in the viewers.

Last year’s coverage of the event drew in 1.41million of viewers who were mostly in lockdown.

The 16 per cent audience decline between 2021 and 2020 is the lowest number recorded since coverage for the event moved from Channel 7 to Ten in 2019.

In its first year, after Ten spent $100million to secure broadcast rights for the Melbourne Cup Carnival until 2023, just 1.32million tuned in to watch ‘the race that stops the nation.’

In the four years prior to the broadcast deal, Channel Seven’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup ranged between 1.84million to 2.07million, according to data on TV Tonight.

Aside from Verry Elleegant and jockey James McDonald winning Tuesday’s Cup, Network 10’s streaming service saw a considerable jump in numbers.

In past years, the Melbourne Cup carnival coverage was a goldmine of WAGs, athletes and celebrities who all turn out to watch ‘the race that stops the nation’.

But due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the usually heaving event was something completely different in 2021 with attendees of over 100,000 cut to just 10,000 for Melbourne Cup day.
