The rare 1987 AE86 Toyota Corolla was sold for £46,250 by Car and Classic despite being in an original condition with no modifications or upgrades. Car and Classic said it is now the highest recorded price for a car of this type sold at auction, beating the previous record of £29,000 sold in the USA earlier this year.

“Only the true adoration of this ‘86’ prevented the insurance company from obliterating it after incurring paint damage.

“The frantic bidding in the dying minutes confirmed the demand for a car that is now rightly cast as a legend in its homeland.”

The car achieved such high demand due to its “time-warp” status having been owned by one caring owner.

Except for the paintwork mark, the car has been otherwise kept in excellent condition.

However, Car and Classic says the model still comes with many features of the original model.

Included is a period Nikia phone holder, Toyota mudflaps and dealer-badged registration plates.

Car and Classic have also confirmed the model will be sold with a range of original paperwork.

Also included is the original store brochure she was given when purchasing the car in Wine Red colour back in the day.
