Countdown’s Rachel Riley doesn’t know where to look as letters spell out ‘slut’ on the board… while contestant titters awkwardly at gaffe

Countdown maths whiz Rachel Riley didn’t know which way to look as one of the show’s contestant’s inadvertently spelled out ‘slut’ on the board on Thursday’s episode.

At contestant Mike’s request, Rachel chose two consonants first, picking the letters ‘S’ and ‘L’. A vowel came next, in the form of the letter ‘U’. And finishing off the selection, Rachel chose a third consonant – ‘T’.

The unfortunate fourth letter left Mike tittering awkwardly off camera as Rachel smirked at the gaffe.

The selection also produced the word ‘smut’, as pointed out by Dictionary Corner guest Pam Ayres.

Last week, Rachel and the show’s main presenter Anne Robinson were left mouths agape when the losing contestant moaned about the contents of his goodie bag.

Gary Knightley – a stay-at-home dad and stand-up comedian – lost in the conundrum to opponent Adele Hannigan, who correctly guessed the word ‘headlight’.

It was a close game, with Anne turning to Gary and asking: ‘Where were you?’

‘About 13 points behind,’ he answered.

‘You’ve been a great sport, we wish you every luck in your career,’ Anne said. ‘You do get a bag of goodies to go home with.’

‘I’m very excited about that,’ he said, deadpan, of the bag containing a clock, an Oxford English dictionary, a mug, a pen and lexicographer Susie Dent’s book.

‘You don’t look too excited,’ Anne observed, playfully.

‘Well – two books and a cup – it’s like something I’d get from my nan!’ Gary quipped.

‘Okay, thank you, bye bye Gary,’ Anne said, dismissively, the camera showing maths whiz Rachel staring on uncertainly.

Rachel then commented that Adele appeared to be ‘more focused on the game’ than Gary, hence why she beat him.

One viewer remarked on Twitter that Gary ‘may have been trying to *out-Anne* Anne at the end there, but he ended up coming across as a right miserable t**t!’
