Nigel and Catherine Chandler were in their home, in Almondbury, Huddersfield when the vandalism took place. On Friday evening, the word “paedo” was spray-painted on their garage door whilst “Sex pest” was written on their BMW.

The attack took place between 9.15pm and 10.15pm.

Vandals also wrote “peedo John” and “sex pest” on the wall outside their home.

Ms Chandler has described the incident as “utterly bizarre”, and has no idea why the couple were targeted.

She has put up a cash reward for information leading to the vandal or vandals’ conviction.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live she said: “This is unbelievably upsetting.

“It is utterly bizarre. I can only think it is a mistaken identity. It is quite worrying.”

Ms Chandler suspects two people may have been involved, due to the differing spelling of “paedo”.

Police have admitted they are “at a loss” as to why the couple were targeted.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police received a report of criminal damage to a vehicle and property at Sharp Lane, Huddersfield, shortly after 10:50pm on Friday night (20th August, 2021). Enquiries are ongoing.”

“Inspector Lee Baragwanath, from Kirklees District Neighbourhood Policing Team, added: “Enquiries are ongoing, but at this stage we are at a loss as to why the victim’s vehicle has been targeted in this way.”

In a separate incident, a teenager has been found guilty of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, following a double stabbing in Queensbury, near Bradford.

The attack, which took place in July 2020, left one victim fighting for his life.

Leon Dowbenko, now 19, was found guilty this week of wounding with intent, in relation to the attacks.

After hearing expert psychiatric evidence, the jury rejected a defence of insanity.

However he was cleared of three counts of attempted murder.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live Taylor Wells, one of the victims, said: “I am not able to be back at work yet. I am not physically able. I am still in a lot of pain and I struggle to breathe.

“I don’t like the guy. He has ruined my life but he is human and he needs some help.

“I have spoken to the other two (Jake and Olivia) – it is bittersweet that we have not got the attempted murder that we wanted.”
