Cush Jumbo and Adrian Dunbar rubbed shoulders with fellow stars at the after-party for their Hamlet press night at The Old Vic in London on Monday night.

The Good Fight actress, 36, who plays the titular role in the play following a recent portrayal by Ian McKellen, 82, while the Line Of Duty star, 63, who stars as Uncle Claudius and the ghost of Hamlet’s father, was dapper in a velvet blazer.

The choice of Cush as the Dane was deemed a ‘woke’ take on Shakespeare, while others said the actress is ‘transfixingly ambiguous, collapsing definitions of gender’ with the majority of reviews coming in at three stars.

The duo looked to be in relaxation mode following their debut, as they rubbed shoulders with Fiona Shaw, Joana Borja and Jonathan Livingstone at the bash.

Cush looked sensational in a gold mini dress as she beamed for cameras following her turn on stage and hours before winning a slew of positive reviews.

Adrian was rocking a dapper look as he made an appearance at the after-party while his co-stars joined him in celebrating the unveiling of the show.

Fiona greeted Cush with an incredibly warm hug while also going for neutral shades in her ensemble comprising a beige mac and a cream scarf.

Alongside a three star accolade, Patrick Marmion for The Daily Mail wrote of Cush: ‘Jumbo has to carry the show for three hours, and just about does that with a performance that is thoughtful, fitfully magnetic and generally vigorous…

‘There’s no question of turning Hamlet into a princess. She is, if anything, more like a disaffected teenage boy, sporting loose jeans, leather jacket and a shaven head…

And Jumbo likes to stroke that pate a lot – gestures of uncertainty reminiscent of Telly Savalas, when the lollipop-sucking detective was stuck on a case in Kojak…

‘There is tenderness, too, in her performance, as well as a sense of guilt at the collateral damage heaped on Ophelia during Hamlet’s long-winded mission of taking revenge on the uncle Claudius, played by Adrian Dunbar, who’s murdered his father (whose Ghost is also portrayed by Dunbar) and married his mother.’

The Times meanwhile – also awarding a three star review – saw Clive Davis pen: ‘Everything revolves, naturally, around Jumbo’s performance…

‘It is striking that the gender question seems irrelevant from the moment she arrives on the stage. Tall and close-cropped, she delivers what could be described as a non-binary Hamlet for our time’.

He also described Dunbar as ‘underpowered’.
