Prince Harry defended for wanting ‘openness’ by Bell

The comments and allegations made against the Firm by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in recent months have been “very damaging” for the Royal Family, according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams. He said: “The Sussexes’ activities, when they’ve spoken out, have been very very damaging.

    “There’s no doubt about it.”

Asked if the Queen would have taken the Duke of Sussex’s remarks personally, Mr Fitzwilliams told the Daily Star: “She has realised how unhappy they were, but speaking out in the way they have is a totally different thing.”

He added: “The Queen will have found the way the Sussexes have handled things, I think, deplorable.”

Meghan and Prince Harry opened up about their struggles within the Royal Family in their landmark interview with Oprah Winfrey, first broadcasted in early March.

In that two-hour-long chat, the Duke and Duchess made damaging claims of racism and neglect and lifted the lid on tensions with some of their closest relatives.

Asked why they decided to step down as full-time working royals, Prince Harry said they experienced a “lack of support and lack of understanding”.

However, they spoke highly about the Queen, with Meghan saying the monarch had always been wonderful to her and Harry denying he ever blindsided his grandmother as he has too much respect for her.

The Duke of Sussex again spoke about the Royal Family two months later, when he took part in the Armchair Expert podcast with Hollywood actor Dax Shepard.

Discussing growing up under the spotlight and public attention, the Duke likened his royal life to a “mix between The Truman Show and being in a zoo”.

Moreover, he appeared to criticise Prince Charles for his upbringing and for not “breaking the cycle” of pain and suffering he himself had experienced.

These remarks reportedly sparked outrage among a few royal aides.

The Mail on Sunday reported in mid-May some palace aides, incensed by the “shocking” comments on Prince Charles’s parenting skills, had called on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to give up their titles.

During the programme, released in May on Apple TV+, Prince Harry spoke candidly about his mental health and healing, even allowing to be filmed during an eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy session.

But he also claimed his family did not speak about Princess Diana’s death and his family expected him to just cope with the media pressure when he was a teenager.

Speaking about Prince Charles, he also said: “My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to both William and I, ‘Well it was like that for me so it’s going to be like that for you’.

“That doesn’t make sense. Just because you suffered doesn’t mean that your kids have to suffer, in fact quite the opposite.

“If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you had, that you can make it right for your kids.”

Buckingham Palace hasn’t addressed the claims made by the Sussexes and only issued a statement in response to Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah.

In the 61-word statement, the Queen said to be “saddened” to have learned the full extent of Harry and Meghan’s struggles and pledged to look into the issues raised by the Sussexes.

The monarch ended her statement by saying: “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Buckingham Palace has voiced the Queen’s affection for the Sussexes also in two other crucial statements.

On January 18, following the summit held at Sandringham during which Harry, Charles, William and the Queen fleshed out the terms of the Sussexes’ exit from the Firm, the monarch said in a message in which she thanked Meghan and Harry for their royal work and efforts: “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family.

“I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”

The Queen also said to be “particularly proud” of how quickly Meghan had become a member of the family.

In February, Buckingham Palace issued a statement reporting the Queen’s decision to take back from the Sussexes their military and royal patronages.

The statement ended saying: “While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”
