Diana was a ‘natural’ with children while Camilla mirrors Queen – ‘wary’ & ‘cautious’

Judi said: “Diana’s approach with small children was always authentic, spontaneous and, as her husband was always fond of saying about his relationship with Camilla, ‘non-negotiable’.”

Diana’s approach to public appearances and events was unique and historical as she interacted and spoke in depth with children, whereas before her, members of the Royal Family would often only nod at children and perhaps accept a bouquet of flowers from them.

“A small child could be a like a mini wrecking-ball to formal clothing and expensive jewellery and so a wary distance tended to be kept,” Judi explained.

The body language expert continued: “Diana’s work as a nanny and then in a nursery had given her a natural affinity with small children though and she retained that affinity when she became a Princess.

“Her body language and her competence and confidence with children was one of the first non-verbal signals of a breath of change in the Royal Family.”

Judi went on to say Diana “broke with royal tradition naturally and decisively when she used several of her body language traits, like bending to the same level as the children, engaging them in some intense-looking chats and, of course, cuddling and carrying small babies”.

She added: “Her bonds and her body language with children looked natural and competent.

As for Camilla, Judi claimed the Duchess usually looks less comfortable with children than Diana did.

She said: “Camilla has had a less easy induction into her relationship with the public and, unlike Diana, she looks much less comfortable taking a decisive and active approach when it comes to the small children she meets on royal visits.

“Her body language role model seems to be the Queen rather than Diana, meaning we can see her smiling, laughing and even waving at children but with a much more hands-off approach.”

Judi continued: “Camilla tends to look slightly wary with children, happy to meet them and happy to chat but with no signs of decisive action when it comes to more tactile or levelling behaviours.

Looking at one photo of Camilla with a small boy, the body language expert said: “She places one arm around his back but her open-mouthed laugh to others suggests she might feel a little awkward.”

Judi went on to say that Camilla’s “role in public is less defined than Diana’s”.

She said: “Where Diana might react spontaneously, disregarding royal tradition to behave in a way that she felt was both natural and important, Camilla tends to mirror her husband more and take her lead from him, which is a much less tactile approach.

“For Diana, the body language and behaviours were part of how she became known as ‘The People’s Princess’ – it looked like a small act of rebellion that proved she cared about the public and won hearts and minds around the world.

“Camilla’s more cautious and rather wary approach won’t grow similar bonds,” Judi added.

“But her very kindly smile and less tactile approach could see her taking on the ‘nation’s granny’ role that both the Queen and her mother held in the public’s affection.”
