Diana’s ‘striking’ jab at Charles future reign was ‘moment’ Queen knew ‘this cannot go on'

Princess Diana’s official exit from the Royal Family was all down to one “surprising” revelation, according to commentators. The late Princess of Wales had spoken candidly about her marriage, infidelities, and time in the monarchy during her 1995 BBC Panorama interview. However, it was a shot at Prince Charles’ reign that “really got [the Queen] going”, according to the Royally Us podcast.

Host Molly Mulshine told listeners: “Former BBC Royal Correspondent Michael Cole said that the most striking thing, out of all the revelations made, was when [Diana] said that Charles is not fit to be king.

“She even said that he might not want to be king.

“Everything else, like the affairs, none of that really moved the needle on her needing to not be in the Royal Family anymore.

“But apparently this was the moment that the Queen and the people in the establishment said this cannot go on.”

Co-host Christina Garibaldi added: “That’s crazy after everything that she said.

“Obviously this is the interview where she said there were three in the marriage.

“But that wasn’t the moment that really got them going – it was that Charles does not want to be future king.

“That is kind of surprising and pretty shocking to me.”

She told Martin Bashir: “There was always conflict on that subject with him when we discussed it, and I understood that conflict.

“It’s a very demanding role, being Prince of Wales, but it’s an equally more demanding role being King.

“And being Prince of Wales produces more freedom now, and being King would be a little bit more suffocating.

“And because I know the character I would think that the top job, as I call it, would bring enormous limitations to him, and I don’t know whether he could adapt to that.”
