Donald Trump blames 'woke politics' for US' poor Olympic performance: 'Proved my point'

The former US President made a bizarre speech to a crowd during a campaign-style rally in Arkansas last Saturday night. He claimed that “woke politics” was taking the “life and joy out of everything”. He added: “Woke-ism makes you lose, ruins your mind and ruins you as a person. You become warped. You become demented.

“Earlier this week, [the women’s team] unexpectedly lost to Sweden, three to nothing, and Americans were happy about it.”

As the crowd started to jeer, Mr Trump stated: “You proved that point before I even said it.”

The US Women’s team, favoured to win a gold medal in Tokyo and ranked number one in the world, has endured a rocky start to the Olympic Games.

The side, who took the knee during the National Anthem of their opening game in protest against racism, suffered an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Sweden on June 21.

But they rebounded with a 6-1 win over New Zealand on Saturday.

Speaking after their loss, captain Megan Rapinoe insisted that she “welcomes criticism” but believes the unfair critique of women’s sports “still needs to get better”.

Ms Rapinoe admitted that the team got a little bit inside their own heads against Sweden and that it is “do-or-die mode” from now on.

But her comments sparked an even stranger response from Donald Trump Jr, who took to Twitter to mock the OL Reign star.

The 43-year-old wrote: “Hey Megan… maybe it’s you!”

His father has previously clashed with the USWNT, namely with Ms Rapinoe during the 2019 World Cup.

In a video that went viral online, Ms Rapinoe stated she was “not going to the f***ing White House” if her team won the tournament.

Mr Trump hit back at her comments on Twitter, saying “I am a big fan of the American Team, and women’s soccer, but Megan should win first before she talks!

“Finish the job! We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the team, win or lose.

“Megan should never disrespect our country, the White House, or our flag, especially since so much has been done for her and the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is going great!”

Ms Rapinoe later confirmed that she would “absolutely not” visit the White House if the USWNT won the World Cup

She said: “I am not going to fake it, hobnob with the President, who is clearly against so many of the things that I am [for] and so many of the things that I actually am.

“I have no interest in extending our platform to him.

The USWNT takes on the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Friday at 12pm.
