She split from her boyfriend Thomas Doherty in 2020 after four years together.
And Dove Cameron did not hold back as she described her painful separation during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
While the 25-year-old singer admitted the ‘breakup f**ked me up’, she was fortunately able to channel her heartbreak into her new track, LazyBaby.
‘The breakup f**ked me up’: Dove Cameron got real about her painful separation during an interview with Entertainment Tonight
‘LazyBaby is about a breakup, or well, it follows post-breakup. I went through a very public breakup last year, and I was in a really bad place, like a really, really bad place,’ she told the outlet.
‘The breakup f**ked me up. It was really hard, and I needed something that was going to get me from where I was, in the mourning process, into the other side.’
Making matters even worse was the pandemic, which meant Dove was unable to see any of her loved ones during such a personally difficult time.
‘I was alone, and it was during the pandemic. No one could come out and see me and I couldn’t leave Canada, and everything was shut down,’ the songstress said. ‘So I was really struggling to work through that.’

But Dove ended up turning lemons into lemonade, and released her track about the breakup a few months later in April 2021.
Despite the painful breakup, Dove says she and Thomas are ‘very amicable’ nowadays, and he even is a fan of the new track.
Dove met Thomas on the set of their 2017 Disney film Descendants 2 and in December she announced their split.
‘hi all. In October, @thomasadoherty and I decided to part ways,’ Dove’s tweet read in full.

‘The decision was incredibly difficult, but we still have love for each other, and will remain friends. Thank you for allowing us our privacy in this time.’
In addition to her breakup, Dove also shed light on her sexuality after coming out as bisexual to fans last year.
While she only went public with being bisexual last year, her inner circle have been aware of the truth for some time.
Dove says she remembers having a discussion with her mother about her sexuality when she was just eight-years-old.
Channeling the heartbreak: Dove ended up turning lemons into lemonade, and released her track about the breakup a few months later in April 2021
She told Entertainment Tonight: ‘I have been out in my own personal life ever since I can remember. I think the first time I had a conversation about my sexuality, I was like eight years old with my mom. Anybody who I’ve met since then… I’ve said I’m bi… and it’s just been like, “Oh, OK.” Nobody’s ever been like, “What?”
‘I don’t think it’s a big shock once you get to know me, really. When I came out last year, I really was like, ‘Oh great, there it is.’ ‘
And now she’s ‘really, really out’ publicly, Dove is excited to be celebrating Pride Month this June as it feels different for her this time round.
‘It’s special’: Despite being out in her personal life for some time, the impact of her very first Pride Month as an openly bisexual woman has not been lost on Dove
She said: ‘This is going to be my first Pride Month, like, really, really out. My friend texted me the other day and was like, “This month is for you,” and I was like, “Oh… wow.”‘
Despite being out in her personal life for some time, the impact of her very first Pride Month as an openly bisexual woman has not been lost on Dove.
‘I feel different being out and having people say things like that to me, like, “Happy Pride Month.” I’m like, “Oh, thank you. Thanks.”
‘I’m usually the one wishing happy Pride Month and counting myself like an ally. So yeah, it’s special. It’s special. I need to figure out what I’m going to do.’

Dove will be returning to the world of her Descendants character Mal in the animated special The Royal Wedding, which will air on the Disney Channel this summer.
She’s also set to appear in a live-action reboot of the popular Cartoon Network series The Powerpuff Girls with Chloe Bennet and Yana Perrault.
The three actresses will be playing the cartoon superheroes as live-action adults as they try to stabilize their lives after losing their childhoods to endless crime fighting.
A pilot was already filmed for the series, but the creators will have to go back to the drawing board after executives for The CW decided it was ‘too campy’ for the network, according to TV Line.
