Drivers could be fined up to £5,000 for taking off jumpers and cardigans this summer

Experts at Marmalade Insurance warn drivers could be hit with financial penalties for taking off thick jumpers, cardigans or jackets while trying to drive. They warn removing clothes whilst behind the wheel could seriously impact your ability to focus on the road.

This could reduce your ability to concentrate on the road, potentially leading to accidents.

Crispin Monger, CEO of Marmalade said their focus was to ensure all road users were safe behind the wheel.

He said: “With the long summer ahead, people will generally be spending a lot more time on the roads, travelling to their staycations or visiting family and friends.

“We thought it would be handy for new drivers of the UK to have this guide to hand should they need it.

“It offers some real pearls of wisdom from the team and should help new drivers be safer on the roads.

“Most new drivers haven’t had the best time over the last six months and many will be wanting to experience the freedom of being on the road and making sure that they can do that safely is a real focus for us.”

Drivers could also be hit with penalties based on the type of clothes they wear while driving.

Common clothing such as baggy jeans or a dress could see drivers hit with careless driving penalties.

This is because the clothing may restrict their movements and prevent you from using the controls in a few ways.

Alistair Grier, Director of Car Money warned clothing was also likely to affect your car insurance costs.

He said: “The price of your car insurance is also going to increase dramatically if you are involved in a car accident and you were behind the wheel in inappropriate clothing that forced you to drive carelessly.”
