He explained of their friendship: ‘When I had my daughter he would ring me once a week just to check up on me with being a new dad.

‘And then I had a friend pass away and he started ringing me everyday to check up on me.

‘So we speak all the time, I spoke to him this morning and I’ll speak to him tomorrow.

‘When his song came out Cold Heart with Dua Lipa he was so excited and buzzing he was like ‘Wow I’m 74 and I’m top 20′ and then it climbed up and up.’

He said of their festive collaboration: ‘We’ve got a Christmas song together. Step Into Christmas gets higher and higher in the charts each year and he was like ‘I wanna do another Christmas song’.

‘I had always been against doing a Christmas song and if you’re going to do it then you have to throw the kitchen sink at it, do it properly. I went to stay with him and we wrote three!’

He also offered a rare glimpse into life with his daughter, who was backstage as he filmed the chat show, saying that she has learnt to call him ‘Dada’.

He said: ‘She says Dada and points at me. And I’m like okay yay now she knows. But before she just said Dada and would like point at an orange or something.

‘She’s backstage, she’s one now. My wife and I were just reminiscing as last time I did Fallon we went on our second date afterward and now look at us!’

Fallon then asked if he played her his music yet to which he said: ‘We haven’t quite got to Baby Shark yet!’

It comes after Ed contracted Covid-19 last month and had been forced to isolate with his daughter who also tested positive for the virus.

Ed recently announced he will perform on Saturday Night Live.

The Brit Award winner completed his quarantine period after testing positive and has now been cleared to take to the stage for the show’s November 6 broadcast, which will be hosted by Succession star Kieran Culkin.

He took to Instagram on Tuesday to inform his followers that he’s ‘had the all-clear’ and has now been released from isolation.

The songwriter wrote: ‘Posting this pic to say I’m released from Covid isolation today, so if you see me out and about I’ve had the all-clear and done my quarantine.

‘Excited to hit the ground running with work again, and SNL is still on, so tune in Saturday, see you there.’

Saturday Night Live producers will surely be relieved as it was previously reported that they were ‘scrambling’ to replace Ed after the singer revealed that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

An insider told Page Six that producers on the NBC comedy staple were seeking ‘another singer who appeals to the same demo’ to replace Sheeran on the show, with Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes cited as potential stand-ins.

The source said that the show could permit Ed to stage a remote performance, but typically, ‘the show likes to have the performer in studio. Ed is offering to perform live via video link, but this isn’t something SNL does.’
