Philippe Commaret, managing director of EDF Customers, has said taking on more customers would bring difficulties. It comes as BP-backed Pure Planet and Colorado Energy ceased trading, joining a number of other small energy firms.

Mr Commaret spoke on BBC’s Radio 4 programme about rising gas prices and their efforts to protect those affected.

He said: “We have taken on more emergency customers than any other retailers across the industry.

“Our priority is ensuring that the best service possible is delivered to our customers.

“However, taking on 10,000 customers is certainly a challenge.

“Therefore, we think its best to wait until the new customers which we are taking on currently have joined us.”

The managing director also said the firm’s biggest concern is the “financial impact on customers”.

Mr Commaret added: “We have provided customers with financial support during this time.

“As well as this, we have give financial tips and tricks such as installing smart meters in homes.”

Pure Planet supplied gas and electricity to around 235,000 domestic customers, while Colorado Energy dealt supplied to around 15,000 domestic customers.

Speaking on Wednesday, Neil Lawrence, director of retail at Ofgem, said: “Ofgem’s number one priority is to protect customers.

“I want to reassure affected customers that they do not need to worry: under our safety net we’ll make sure your energy supplies continue.”
