‘Beyond thoughtful and kind’: Elton John is praised for supporting friend through cancer – two years after star secretly battled the disease himself

  • Duncan Wallace worked on the singer’s radio show before his terminal brain tumour diagnosis in 2019
  • Elton, 74, assisted his friend through his battle and has remained in touch with his widow following Duncan’s death in April this year
  • In 2019, Elton revealed he had secretly battled prostate cancer two years before

Elton John has been labelled as ‘thoughtful and kind’ for the way in which he supported a friend while he was dying of cancer.

Duncan Wallace worked on the singer’s hit radio show, The Rocket Hour, before he was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour in 2019.

Elton, 74 – who previously battled prostate cancer – stood by his friend during his treatment and donated to cancer charities in his friend’s honour.

Duncan’s wife Katie recently ran The Great North Run in memory of her husband – who died aged 39 back in April – and revealed she received support from Elton prior to the race.

She added that Elton has continued to keep in touch since Duncan’s death.

Katie told The Mirror: ‘Throughout this horrible ordeal, Elton has been beyond thoughtful and kind, regularly calling to see how we’re coping. He’s such a lovely man.

‘We just hope his support along with all the other well-wishers will make a difference, and save lives.’

She also revealed that Elton told her about their working partnership: ‘We had the most wonderful relationship. Every night in my prayers to God, I say, “Give him a hug from me, will you?”‘

Elton went on to pay tribute to his late friend saying: ‘We had a blast working together. He’d turn me on to stuff and I’d turn him on to stuff. We were a great team and he is sorely missed.’

Katie did the half marathon to raise money for charity, and ended up raising £21,000, which included a donation from Elton.

The race was sentimental for Katie, who ran the race with her late husband, who hails from Newcastle, two years ago while he was going through treatment.

The couple shared two children seven-year-old Finn and Izzy, five.

Elton has dealt with cancer on a personal basis, and had his prostate gland removed when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017.

The singer then suffered a major infection following the operation, revealing in a documentary: ‘I literally had to learn to walk again. I was extremely sick. Luckily I survived it. Now I am fine. But there are very few bits of me left!’

He went on: ‘There is no hair, a pacemaker, there is no tonsils, there is no prostate, there is no appendix. I have had kidney stones. I am like the Bionic Woman. I am like Lindsay Wagner or Steve Austin. Whichever one you want to call it.’

Elton is father to sons Elijah, eight, and Zachary, 10, and revealed the severity of the scare in his autobiography, Me, serialised in the Daily Mail.

He told how he did a Las Vegas show in a lot of pain after the operation and thought: ‘Don’t let me die, I want to see my children grow up.’
