Emmerdale legend Cain Dingle (played by Jeff Hordley) could be sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his arch-enemy Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) if he doesn’t give his defence lawyer an explanation for the businessman’s death. Cain’s plea hearing is just around the corner and he has still not revealed what plea he’s entering. This has left many fans wondering if he is protecting his son Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) who could be “the real killer”.
During Thursday’s instalment of the soap, residents were divided over whether Cain was responsible for shooting Al dead.
As Cain was on the phone with his wife Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) from prison, his son Kyle asked if he could speak to his dad.
Moira snapped: “Kyle, will you just give me one second, please honey!”
As she turned her attention back towards her talk with Cain she told him she wanted an explanation rather than an apology.
“You are talking but you are just not telling me anything,” she fumed before Cain ended the call.

Cain didn’t even tell his wife if he was pleading not guilty or otherwise, leaving her feeling completely in the dark about the situation.
Later on in the episode, Cain spoke to his defence lawyer who wanted to hear the village hardman’s version of events.
Cain gave nothing away, leaving viewers wondering if he was protecting someone.
Could his son Kyle be the real murderer who shot Al when he saw his dad fighting with him? Is that why he was desperate to speak to him on the phone?
“But Kerry will find out and take the rap cos she’s leaving because Laura (who plays her) has just had a baby anyway so needs to be written out for a bit. #Emmerdale.” (sic)
Bernice Tucker said: “I think Cain is covering for Kyle #Emmerdale.”
Mary remarked: “Pretty obvious that Kyle is the real killer of Al, not Cain Dingle #Emmerdale.”
@Pukfut95 commented: “I wholeheartedly don’t believe Aaron killed Al in #Emmerdale, I think Kyle shot him and Cain is protecting his son.”
Cain actor Jeff first entered Emmerdale 22 years ago and he was recently voted as the soap’s best character of all time.
Emmerdale viewers are bound to be left heartbroken if Cain’s character had to spend life behind bars.
Addressing his future on the ITV soap with the Loose Women panel earlier this week, Jeff said: “I’m worried every year, we are only on a year’s contract at a time.
“There are times of the year when people’s contracts are up in the air – so everyone is nervous.”
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
