Ukraine get us underway in Rome. 

7.55pm: We have teams on the pitch and the national anthems will follow. How are the nerves?

7.40pm: 20 minutes to go, England fans. How do we feel? Any predictions? 

7.08pm: Southgate explains the decision to start Sancho: “He’s been really bright in training in the last 10 days or so.

“Changing back to a back four meant that we wanted a right-footer on that side (right).

“It looks like Ukraine will play a back five. It’s been a huge challenge for our attacking player – we have so much depth.

“He’s shown his talent in training and his profile suits this game.”

6.55pm: England or Ukraine will play Denmark in the semi-final of Euro 2020.

The Danes have sensationally just beaten England’s Group D opponents Czech Republic in the quarter-final. 

Sancho starts

It’s a first start of the tournament for Jadon Sancho, fresh from a nearly-completed move to Manchester United. 

It also appears that Southgate has reverted to the 4-2-3-1 that got England through the group stage.

Mason Mount comes back into the midfield after his self-isolation period and is the other England change.

6.30pm: England have four players walking a disciplinary tightrope this evening. 

Harry Maguire, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Phil Foden are all on a yellow card and will miss the semi-final, if England qualify for it, should they be cautioned this evening.

Should Southgate bench any of the quartet to make sure they’re free for a potential last-four clash?

6.15pm: England boss Southgate is fully aware that Ukraine will hardly step aside and let the Three Lions into the semis without a fight this evening.

He said pre-match: “We want to enjoy it and we are very focussed on where we want to head, but we’re not satisfied with where we’ve got to – and we have to deliver that. 

“It’s totally about staying in the present and focussing on this immediate challenge ahead of us.

“The mindset has got to be about Saturday. Not beyond Saturday. There’s not a consideration in our heads beyond Saturday and making sure we’re prepared for this game with Ukraine.

“This is the next step, the next opportunity, the opportunity to get to a third semi-final for us in the last few years, a second major tournament semi-final.

“You’ve got to go back to Sir Alf’s time to be able to do that. It’s another chance for the team to make history. 

“We’ve moved on from Germany pretty quickly and it’s not easy because you all get lovely messages and if they’re reading the papers or watching television, I’m sure there’ll be lots to enjoy for them. But the mindset has got to be about Saturday.”

The two countries go head-to-head for the first time in eight years for a place in the final four of the tournament.

Ukraine have never previously reached this stage of a European Championship while England seek a semi-final spot for the first time since 1996.

Gareth Southgate’s side are the big favourites after seeing off Germany but Ukraine cannot be underestimated.
