Anti-Protocol protesters from the predominately loyalist area of West Belfast moved towards the nationalist Springfield Road this evening to voice their displeasure at the current situation. Many are angry at the imposition of the checks between the province and the rest of the UK – something they claim threatens their British identity.

The gates dividing the loyalist Shankill area and nationalist Springfield Road were closed as a precaution.

Police North Belfast tweeted: “Police are dealing with public disorder in the Lanark Way area of north Belfast this evening.

“A number of missiles and fireworks have been thrown towards police.

“Officers are advising motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area until further notice.”
