Eva Mendes, 47, shares 'powerful' parenting quote as she pays tribute to elderly mother

She’s a mother to daughters Esmerelda, six, and four-year-old Amanda.

And it seems Eva Mendes takes inspiration from her mother Eva Suárez when it comes to raising her kids as she took to Instagram to honour her on Wednesday.

The retired actress, 47, posted a picture and a quote from Brené Brown reading: ‘The question isn’t so much, “Are you parenting the right way?” as it is, “Are you the adult that you want your child to grow up to be?”‘

Eva captioned her post: ‘My Mami always leads by example. This powerful parenting quote reminded me of how she raised me. Wanted to pass on. Thanks @mindfulgentlemama for sharing.’

The model shared a photo of herself with her mother as they relaxed at home.

It appears the picture may have been taken at Christmas as she was dressed in fun festive attire with items such as Santa hats and candy canes printed across it.

The businesswoman sat with her arm around her family matriarch and the pair looked content as they smiled for the camera.

Eva was born to Cuban parents Eva Pérez Suárez and Juan Carlos Méndez, and she was raised by her mother in the Los Angeles area of Silver Lake.

After her parents divorced, Eva’s mother worked hard to look after her and her brother, the late Juan Carlos Méndez Jr, while working at the famous Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Eva recently showed off the colorful stylings of her two children Esmerelda and Amanda, and how they use her as a ‘canvas.’

She shared a photo of herself on Instagram, revealing some of the colours her kids used on her face.

‘My kids did this to me. Again. From head to toe. I guess, when in doubt, be their canvas,’ Mendes said in the caption.

She was wearing a black and white striped top with large gold hoop earrings and a colorful headdress for the snap. There were smudges of red and green paint visible on her cheek and chin, as evidence of her being a ‘canvas.’

Mendes met their daughters’ father, Ryan Gosling in 2011, while filming their indie movie The Place Beyond the Pines. They started dating shortly thereafter, with Mendes giving birth to Esmerelda in 2014 and Amanda in 2016.

She also made the decision to retire from acting, with her final role in husband Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River.

When asked about her six-year acting hiatus in an Instagram comment last year, Mendes said there are roles she simply does not want now that she’s a mom.

‘As a mother now, there are many roles I won’t do. There are many subject matters that I don’t want to be involved with, so it limits my choices and I’m fine with that. I have to set an example for my girls now,’ she said.

Back in 2018, just two years into her retirement, Mendes stated to E! Online that she simply does not want to leave her kids to go back to work.

‘I’m just so obsessed with my kids that I don’t want to leave them,’ Mendes said, adding, ‘They’re just still so little.’

‘I don’t feel like I have it balanced at all. I kind of have been figuring it out as I’m going along and it’s just important to have a support system,’ she continued.

She added: ‘I have my family, I have Ryan’s family and that’s just like, invaluable to have family around supporting you.’
