F1 CEO lays out new blueprint which could play into Lewis Hamilton's favour

Stefano Domenicali wants F1 drivers to be at the fore of his plans to move the sport forwards. The blueprint laid out by the new chief could hand more power to those who put their life on the line in the cockpit.

Hamilton is hoping to create history this year by pulling away from the world title record he shares with Michael Schumacher.

Max Verstappen could be the heir to the Brit’s throne. The hot-headed Dutchman is attempting to lead Red Bull’s fight back to the top.

A host of other young drivers are also starting to emerge to show the future is bright.

George Russell, Lando Norris, Alex Albon, Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher are all under 25 years old.

Meanwhile, two-time F1 world champion Fernandes Alonso will return to action this year.

With a host of talented drivers in the sport, Domenicali wants to maximise their potential, both on and off the track.

“[The drivers] will be at the centre of the future of Formula 1,” Domenicali told Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle.

“I think that they represent the real soul of our sport – their faces, their ability.

“I would say to interpret them, not only as drivers, but as the ambassadors of our sport. They will be crucial for the future.

“We didn’t have in the last decade so many good drivers as we have now.

“We have incredible young drivers, there is an incredible record to be achieved for Lewis, for others, so the challenge there is great.”

With Hamilton being the biggest star in F1 he could have the most to gain from Domenicali’s plan.

However, the 36-year-old must first sort out his new contract with Mercedes, which has not yet been signed.

Hamilton’s deal expired three weeks ago and he is still haggling with the Silver Arrows over pay.

Express Sport understands that a deal is expected to be complete before pre-season testing commences on March 2.
