Cult leader Teddy Maddox released a nuclear warhead dooming everyone remaining on earth on Sunday’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead.

Teddy was able to succeed despite desperate attempts by Morgan and his followers to prevent the missiles’ launch.

The episode opened with Dakota [Zoe Margaret Colletti] a new recruit talking to Teddy about how because of her mom that ‘ I still never felt comfortable in my own skin.’

Teddy told her that he also overheard her talking with Alicia Clark [Alycia Debnam-Carey] and that he knew that she just wanted ‘someone to love you just the way you are.’

Dakota laughed and appeared to be taken in by Teddy’s charisma.

‘You really think I can find that person in your new world?,’ Dakota asked.

Teddy smiled, leaned in closer to her and said ‘you already have.’

    ‘You?’ asked Dakota.

    ‘Yes,’ Teddy responded.

When Dakota asked Teddy about Alicia and whether he saw something special in her as well, Teddy told her he did and he loved what Alicia ‘would become.’

‘But that is something that you and I will never be and there is nothing to feel sorry about there,’ Teddy told Dakota. ‘ You are so much like me. We are two very logical conclusions in a world that is built on a foundation of violence, lies and self interest. That is why we understand each other.’

Teddy then tells her that ‘conclusions do not belong in a world where things are just about to get started.’

Dakota seemed scared by Teddy’s prediction and asked nervously ‘what is going to happen to us?’

Teddy’s next words were of no comfort, though, for Dakota ‘we are going to die up here with everyone else.’

Dakota appeared visibly shaken and wondered whether she made the right decision to join Teddy’s cult. Then Teddy gave her a choice and asked if she wanted to pretend to be someone else or did she want to stay ‘just the way you are for whatever time we have left.’

Just then the locked door opens and Dakota blurted out ‘I want to be who I am.’

Teddy, pleased, leaned in and brushed her check with his hand and said ‘good girl.

The lights went on in the room to reveal that they were in the command center of the submarine USS Pennsylvania that contained the nuclear missile that the cult has been trying to release to destroy humanity.

Riley [Nick Stahl] walked in. He had turned on the lights tapping into the emergency batteries. Riley, the chief member of the cult that lived in the Holding, announced that he still needed to get the diesels running to power the rest of the vessel.

When Dakota asked how Riley he knew how to restart the generators, he told her had previously been the weapons officer on the vessel.

‘When I found Riley, he was a broken man,’ Teddy told Dakota. ‘Broken because he found himself like you. He found himself without a family. A family to call his own.’

Riley then asked Teddy if he ‘had them’ and Teddy showed him the keys he was wearing around his neck.

Dakota laughed and said that Virginia [Colby Minifie], her mother and former leader of the Pioneers,  also had a thing about keys.

‘She said they were going to unlock the future,’ Dakota told Teddy. ‘I don’t think this is what she had in mind.’

Riley left the room and Dakota asked Teddy if everyone onboard knows that they are going to die. Teddy told her that everyone knows and that it was easy to get people to follow him.

‘You just have to offer them something they really want to believe in, just that not a lot of people want to die,’ he said, as pulled out his gun and showed it to Dakota.

Teddy’s comments referred to Morgan James [Lennie James], the moral conscience and ringleader of the ‘good survivors.’ ‘Getting them to do that takes something else,’ Teddy said.

Teddy handed a shocked Dakota his gun. On land Morgan picked up his axe, stared at the blade and got on his horse and rode away. On the submarine, Dakota was confused on what she was supposed to do with the gun and asked Teddy ‘what does it take?’

Teddy told her ‘It’s really not that complicated. You just have to be willing to die with them.’

Outside the submarine, Morgan on horseback corralled his followers and led them to the beached ship controlled by Teddy.

On horseback, Morgan stopped as he neared the boat to read a torn note that said ‘you don’t know me, but I heard your message. You need to do the same. You still have time.’

Morgan was joined by Victor Strand [Coleman Domingo], John Dorie [Garret Dillahunt] and June Dorie [Jenna Elfman], Dwight [Austin Amelio], Grace [Karen David], who have been tracking the cult leader.

They used a blowtorch to open a hatch and infiltrate the beached submarine.

Morgan climbed into the boat and was immediately attacked by a zombie. June was able to shoot it dead from above. The group climbed after him. After a brief walk through the ship, they were met by crew members who were now zombies. Grace told them that there were 150 crew members/potential zombies onboard.

‘I’m not sure I packed enough ammo for this,’ said John.

They quickly killed the small number of zombies that attacked them and searched for the boat’s nuclear missiles. June questioned whether the missiles can be dismantled. Grace manned the emergency communications system and tried to use it to navigate them. Morgan asked them to help get them to the weapons room, when Teddy suddenly chimed in on the intercom system and said ‘you sure got here fast.’

Morgan was shocked. John took over the intercom and asked Teddy if he recognized this voice. John reminded him that the last time he heard his voice ‘you were in a Denton County courthouse listening to my testimony against you.’

‘Officer Dorie, is that really you?’ asked Teddy. ‘You couldn’t kill me then and you sure as sh** aren’t going to do it now.’

John responded ‘I beg to differ. I have a bullet I plan to put in your head by day’s end.’

Teddy said he saw the day ending differently. Teddy told them they weren’t safe from the missiles. Morgan frantically then realized they were in danger and relayed to Grace to try to get people as far away from the boat as possible.

Teddy then told him they were like ‘two peas in a pod. I am leading everyone to their end and you are doing the same thing. Except I’m not fooling myself about what I am doing.’

When it became apparent that Morgan could not get his people to safety in time, he told them that ‘we will not fail.’ The zombies in the next chamber banged on the metal. At one point Morgan appeared to be surrounded at all sides by zombies. He crawled along with Victor into another chamber and then sealed the opening.

Morgan broke down and said he felt responsible for the lives of his followers that had come with him this far. Victor assured him that the people came with him ‘because they wanted to and not because you owe them something.’ Morgan wanted to know why Victor was even still there. Victor told him he was there and fighting ‘for everyone.’

Zombies continued to appear as radiation levels rose to dangerous levels. A highly radioactive zombie dropped to the ground in front of them. Using their counters, Morgan discovered that the rise in radiation came from the next chamber which he said registered ‘off the charts.’ The motors turned on and Morgan understood that meant the diesel engine of the sub was turning on.

Morgan decided he needed to enter the next compartment after Grace told him ‘the only way to get a reading like that would be from exposed radioactive inside the compartment.’ She told him to find another way and that if he went in there ‘it will kill you.’ Zombies closed in on their location.

Victor told him there was another route they could take if they could just kill the zombies blocking the path. Morgan agreed to try Victor’s way. They climbed the stairs and walked into a crew room brimming with zombies. The electricity on the boat went on and more zombies closed in on them.

Out of nowhere, Victor told Morgan ‘that this is why Alicia asked for you because you will do things that I won’t’ and then hit Morgan, pushed him down, took his axe, and kicked him into oncoming zombies. As Morgan was helplessly attacked by zombies, Victor escaped through a nearby open hatch.

Victor walked through the next compartment, but Dakota was waiting and pulled a gun on him.

‘Got the axe, slide it to me,’ she told him.

He kicked the axe to her, but told her she was making the wrong choice.

Dakota took the microphone and told them if she lived with them she would have to do what Morgan wants. She said that it is not going to work ‘Morgan’s way.’ She asked Victor if he ‘really wanted to be the type of person he wanted to be.’ Dakota then accused Victor of killing Morgan, which he denied.

‘Don’t listen to her,’ Victor said. ‘Dakota don’t do this. He is going to kill everyone.’

Dakota told him that was true. She said Alicia would still be here and that she would be a beginning.

‘You and me, we are endings,’ Dakota said. ‘When we start again it won’t be with assh***s like you.’

Morgan appeared knocking Dakota to the ground. Morgan admitted he had given Teddy the key to save Grace and her baby. He said that was why he had to succeed. He told Victor that he would deal with what he did later and handed him the axe.

Teddy and Riley worked in the cockpit to activate the weapon. He called for Sue (Dakota) and then noticed a red buzzer going off at the door. He realized that Morgan and the others had reached the compartment doors. Morgan had pulled passcodes off the dead officers, he said. Teddy and Riley quickly moved to start releasing the weapon using their keys.

Morgan finally tried a key that opened the hatch, but as he entered Teddy had just pushed the weapon’s ignition button. Morgan grabbed Teddy by the neck and told him to stop and pointed a weapon at him,

    ‘We can’t,’ yelled Teddy.

‘I told it was inevitable,’ said Riley.

The submarine shook and a ballistic missile took off from the ship. Riley said they were only able to get one off, but Teddy told them that was enough ‘we have begun.’ Riley told them there were 10 warheads on the nuclear missile but wouldn’t tell them where they were heading. Teddy told them that maybe the missile was headed to the town Morgan had been building.

‘The world will be a better place, you just won’t get to see it yourself,’ Teddy said.

Morgan then decided to release Teddy and told Victor to do the same with Riley. After Teddy and Riley leave, Victor told Morgan that it could have been worse if they had been able to launch other warheads.

‘They could have launched none if we had gotten here sooner,’ Morgan said. Victor apologized for what he did earlier, but told Morgan he was just trying to ‘save lives.’ Morgan did not believe him.

‘You did it so you could tell Alicia what a big hero you were today,’ said Morgan, before he told Victor to leave. With the missile launched, Morgan is left alone in the control room of the boat unsure what to do next.

The season finale of Fear The Walking Dead will air next week on AMC.
