Devastated Ben could barely contain himself as he was visibly distraught at his performance. The 24-year-old slammed his bout despite a valiant effort against Cuba’s Arlen Lopez which was decided by a split decision. Mr Whittaker said it will “take years” to get over the result as he was consoled ring side by coaches and supporters.
Ben Whittaker said: “You don’t win silver, you lose gold”.
“I’m very disappointed with myself.
“I didn’t perform good.
“Of course he’s a class operator but I am very disappointed.”
In a desperately sad moment, he said: “I feel like a failure.
“You’re in this game to win gold… This feeling will stick with me now and I don’t want to feel like this again.”
The boxer was then asked if “on reflection” his heartbreak could change.
The silver medallist replied: “Truthfully no, probably in a couple of years when I look back with my kids.”
