Four Chelsea stars Frank Lampard may sign if he takes over at Rangers after Norwich snub

Chelsea could hand Frank Lampard a boost by allowing a couple of their players to join Rangers if the Blues legend succeeds Steven Gerrard. Lampard has been linked with the vacant job at the Scottish Premiership champions.

The 43-year-old has been without a job since his sacking by Chelsea in January. He was previously in charge at Derby County.

Having been ruled out of the chance to take over at Norwich, Lampard could instead choose to manage Rangers.

The Glasgow side are currently four points clear at the summit of the Scottish top-flight. Gerrard, who has been appointed by Aston Villa, guided them to their first league title in a decade and put them on course for another in the first quarter of the campaign.

And Lampard could get to work straightaway if given the job.

Express Sport picks four Chelsea players he could sign.

    Billy Gilmour

Lampard handed Gilmour his Chelsea debut in August 2019. The academy graduate was handed sporadic chances in the months after before finally bursting onto the scene with a fantastic performance against Liverpool.

Chelsea defeated the Reds 2-0 in the FA Cup tie in March 2020 and Gilmour was sensational. He was famously praised by the often difficult to please Manchester United hero Roy Keane.

The Scotland international has not had it all his own way since, though, having not been a preferred option under Thomas Tuchel. Lampard’s sacking meant that Gilmour found appearances hard to come by.

Tuchel used Gilmour just five times and brutally substituted him at half-time in a Premier League clash with Manchester City.

The midfielder was sent on loan to Norwich ahead of this season, with the Chelsea boss keen for him to develop the tactical side of his game. However, Gilmour has made just six appearances for the Canaries and has not featured at all in the league since September 18.

Daniel Farke’s dismissal could give him another chance to play regular football, but Chelsea could instead cut his loan short and send him to Rangers. After all, it was from the Scottish side that Chelsea bought the talented star.

    Xavier Mbuyamba

Giant defender Mbuyamba was a summer 2020 recruit from Barcelona. The Dutchman had only signed for the LaLiga outfit a year prior.

The 19-year-old suffered a torn meniscus soon after arriving at Stamford Bridge and he had to wait eight months for his U23s debut. That stalled his development.

Mbuyamba has now made 23 appearances for the young Chelsea side and could be ready for a loan.

His physicality and technical ability would mean he would fit seamlessly into the Scottish Premiership.

Should Lampard decide he needs a defender if he succeeds Gerrard at Rangers, Mbuyamba might be a good fit.

    Bryan Fiabema

There was some fanfare when exciting young Norwegian striker Fiabema signed for Chelsea from Tromso in 2020.

The 18-year-old had scored frequently at both club and international youth level and, given the significant interest in his talent, his arrival at Chelsea was considered a coup.

Fiabema has been productive in Chelsea’s youth teams without truly getting close to the first team. He is yet to feature in a matchday squad for Tuchel’s side.

Eight goals in 12 appearances this season is a decent return. Lampard might benefit from a wildcard striker if he joins Rangers.
