Four midfielders Man Utd could target in January as Kalvin Phillips transfer hopes fade

    [ad_1]

Kalvin Phillips is set to sign a new deal at Leeds United if reports are to be believed, leaving Manchester United chiefs at sixes and sevens over a new signing. The Whites midfielder was top of their wish list after deciding against a move for Jude Bellingham, with Borussia Dortmund naming a price of £80million.

With Phillips seemingly a more attainable target, United chiefs were confident about a deal for the hard-working Englishman.

However a deal has failed to come to fruition after the Telegraph reported he is closing on a new contract at Elland Road – meaning United may have to go back to the drawing board. Express Sport takes a look at four other options.

    Declan Rice

Rice has been a long-term United target, more so after playing every single game at Euro 2020 before England fell at the final hurdle.

A key reason as to why West Ham have become a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League, Rice continues to excel in the defensive midfield role that United are desperate to boost.

But with a reported price tag of around £80m – similar to Bellingham’s – it remains to be seen if a deal could be done.

    Harry Winks

Winks seems to be a forgotten name at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially under the guidance of new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Now 25, Winks has only featured in four games this season, enduring a bit-part role despite playing regularly in the past.

And with United in need of a defence-minded player who can pass, Winks could be their remedy.

    DON’T MISS

    Yves Bissouma

Bissouma is a player who has been coveted by almost every big Premier League side.

He was linked with Arsenal and Liverpool earlier this year after some extremely impressive performances in the heart of Brighton’s midfield.

And similar to Rice’s contribution to West Ham’s position, he has been a big reason in Brighton’s rise up the table – and could be the final piece in the jigsaw for United.
