The highly-anticipated Friends reunion show airs around the world on Thursday.

And ahead of the special, the show’s co-creator Kevin Bright revealed some interesting details about the hit sitcom.

Appearing on Hit VIC Breakfast with Tim and Jess, Kevin revealed why they never considered a reboot for the show and the one bizarre storyline for Joey that never made it to air.

Speaking about why they chose a reunion show over a reboot, Kevin said a reboot simply was never an option.

‘We were never leaning in that direction because as we like to say, in order to do anything new or further we would have to undo a lot of where the show ended,’ he said.

‘Because remember this is now 25 years later, you just don’t pick up where you left of and there is a kind of sadness to that.’

He added: ‘Because that’s not what the show is about, it’s not about a mid-life crisis, it’s about another time in your life, so we were like, “let’s pass on that.”

Kevin went on to say that the reunion show is ‘half a documentary, half a variety show,’ and they waited for the coronavirus pandemic to ease a little so they could have a live audience for the show.

‘We couldn’t have ten people with masks on,’ he said.

Kevin also revealed that Disney World approached the creators to have an episode filmed at one of the parks, but they soon issued the writers a firm no when they heard the proposed storyline.

‘We were very close to doing Friends in Disneyworld. Disneyworld approached us,’ Kevin said.

He said the writers came up with the idea that struggling actor Joey [played by Matt LeBlanc] gets a job at Disney World as a ‘giant lightbulb in the electrical parade’ and the Friends gang would come and visit him.

‘Before they get there, Joey has a date with a girl in the Disney parade who plays Cinderella, they go back to his place and have sex and it’s midnight and she has to get her costume back or they will dock pay from her… Joey doesn’t even know her name… her bra becomes the slipper,’ he said.

‘That was the story we pitched to Disney and that’s where the story ends,’ he said with a chuckle, implying the storyline was too racy for the entertainment giant.

This week Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed the eccentric Phoebe Buffay in the NBC sitcom, told News Corp about her close bond with her co-stars.

‘I didn’t realise until the show ended how rare it is how much this cast get along together and how much we still love each other,’ Lisa said.

She added: ‘That’s pretty great and in [the reunion show] we’re going to be reminiscing and celebrating the series.’

Lisa added that ahead of the reunion, the cast – including herself, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer – all jumped on a Zoom call and couldn’t stop laughing as they spoke to one another.

‘The first time we were on a call together, we could barely stay on topic because we kept making each other laugh,’ she said.

Lisa added that fans can expect to hear about a number of behind-the-scenes moments in the ‘fun’ reunion special.

Australian fans can stream the Friends reunion live on BINGE on May 27.
