Gary Neville tips England to win Euro 2020 after Czech Republic win – ‘Don’t be surprised'

Gary Neville has declared that England can dream of winning Euro 2020 after the Three Lions sealed a hard-fought victory over the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening. Raheem Sterling’s early goal proved to be the difference for Gareth Southgate’s side, who have progressed to the knockout stages of the tournament as Group D winners.

The result means that they will face France, Germany or Portugal in seven days’ time at Wembley Stadium.

Tuesday’s performance did not have any impact on England’s hopes of qualifying for the next round, with Monday’s results in Group B and Group C already guaranteeing them a place in the last 16.

However, the hosts looked far more threatening with the ball at feet than in the goalless draw with Scotland on Friday evening, and retained the defensive resoluteness that has earned three clean sheets in as many matches.

Neville, who made 85 appearances for England during his professional career, suggested after the final whistle that Southgate could lead his side to glory this summer by keeping things tight at the back and encouraging them to play their own game.

“Job done,” Neville told ITV Sport. “Really professional. England aren’t going to win this tournament by outplaying France, Germany, Portugal and Spain.

“I don’t think we have the players to do that. We have good players.

“I genuinely think we will win it in the way we are playing now which is professional, by keeping clean sheets, making sure the back is protected by the two in midfield and then creating those individual moments of brilliance.

“Don’t be surprised if we play Germany or France, we go to five at the back because I think we may need more than four defenders against [Kylian] Mbappe, [Antoine] Griezmann and [Karim] Benzema.

“If you are playing against Germany we can comfortably go to wing backs, I don’t rule anything out at this stage.

    DON’T MISS

“But I can’t see that Gareth will play the same way against the Czech Republic as he would against France or Germany.”

Southgate made four changes to the side the faced Scotland for Tuesday’s clash, with Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire all coming into the side.

The England boss confirmed after the match that he was happy with the overall performance from his players, urging them to make the most of their newly-found confidence after winning the group without conceding a single goal.

“I think what they’re showing is adaptability and resilience,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“We’ve had to make so many changes and known that players right from the start weren’t available. Obviously it was the first time we’ve seen Harry Maguire tonight, and we’ve only seen 45 minutes for Jordan Henderson.

“We’re dealing with all those issues and striding on and we know there are bigger tests ahead. All they can do as players is win the group which they have.

“They will feel confident because they’ve played some good sides and had some tough tests. We know the next one is going to be the toughest yet but we are looking forward to that challenge.”
