George Russell has Mercedes 2022 fall-back plan as Williams make feelings clear on Brit

George Russell is in high demand going into 2022, with both Williams and Mercedes said to be keen to sign the driver for next season, and yet he hasn’t actually got any concrete plans in place to secure his future in Formula One.

There’s much talk that Mercedes have all but signed the 23-year-old to replace Valtteri Bottas, despite no clear signal from the team to suggest this is the case.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said he was exploring all the options for next season, including current drivers Lewis Hamilton and Bottas, who are both out of contract at the end of the year.

Hamilton and Wolff meanwhile have both expressed their interest in starting contract negotiations soon, but the question mark remains around Bottas as to if he will stay at the seven-time world champions in 2022.

Russell is also a free agent come the end of the year, with perhaps the best chance of replacing Bottas if the team decide to part ways, due to his links with their junior academy, not forgetting he was picked to replace Hamilton in Bahrain when the Briton was struck down with COVID-19 last season.
