Golden Globes will be given out in 2022 … but show will not be televised on NBC

The Golden Globes are set to be handed out in the upcoming year, but NBC will not be broadcasting any ceremony.

An insider told Variety that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ‘plans to recognize the performances of 2021 to celebrate the great work of the industry this past year at the 79th Annual Golden Globes.’

It was not immediately clear if there would be an event in commemoration with the awards being handed out.

Studios were sent a letter Friday with details of eligibility for the event, with the focus being on performances, a source told the outlet.

The latest comes on the annual award show about five months after NBC in May revealed that it would not be airing the show amid a spate of stories about the HFPA’s problems with diversity, as well as ethical issues.

‘Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,’ the network said. ‘As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. 

‘Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.’

The HFPA, in an effort to remedy the aforementioned issues, has made attempts at reform in multiple areas in recent months, the outlet reported.

The group has added 21 new members, with 29 percent Black journalists; enacted policies against members getting gifts and vacations from studios and talent; and created a committee of three outside members to have seats on its board of directors with oversight on diversity and ethical issues. 

In August, the HFPA confirmed that 63 out of 84 members had voted to make the moves to address the issues.

‘Three months ago, we made a promise to commit to transformational change and with this vote we kept the last and most significant promise in reimagining the HFPA and our role in the industry,’ HFPA board president Ali Sar said in a statement. ‘All of these promised reforms can serve as industry benchmarks and allow us to once again partner meaningfully with Hollywood moving forward.’

Amid the publicity crisis for the Golden Globes earlier this year, Tom Cruise gave back three awards he had previously won, while studios and performers vowed to boycott the proceedings.

Following the HFPA’s announcement in August, NBC said it was ‘encouraged’ by the changes in motion.

‘This marks a positive step forward and signals the HFPA’s willingness to do the work necessary for meaningful change,’ the network said.
