With many households pinching the pennies already this winter, they’ll be keen to know which supermarket is the best for those on a budget this Christmas. Just because customers will be paying less for Christmas dinner favourites, it doesn’t mean the quality is reduced. Good Housekeeping conducted an extensive Christmas taste test and revealed Aldi leads the way on the low-cost line-up and was particularly favoured for its flavoured puddings and meat canapes.
Results came from an expert panel that tucked into 33 categories of food and drink; from pigs in blankets to smoked salmon and roast potatoes.
Vegans and vegetarians are well catered for this year, too, with the panel testing a host of meat-free mains.
In total, 470 festive products from over 130 brands and retailers were sampled, and with costs of food and energy soaring, the testing panel paid particular attention to budget-friendly options this year.
The taste test revealed retailers have done an excellent job of keeping prices affordable across the board, but leading the way on the low-cost line-up was Aldi.

Waitrose & Partners did particularly well on the turkey front, with Sainsbury’s leading the way on sweet treats.
Angela Trofymova, Head of Food & Drink Testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute said: “We’ve been testing for Christmas from May all the way through to October, and are thrilled to be able to share our top picks for the season.
“With prices set to surge over the winter, we’ve been dedicated to sourcing delicious, high quality products that are great value for money.
“Our consumer panel has been incredibly impressed with the amount of innovative, easy-to-cook options available this year, allowing for minimal time in the kitchen, and more time with loved ones.”
