Hartley-Brewer erupts at Sadiq Khan and ‘leftie remoaners’ for politicising Raducanu win

Julia Hartley-Brewer called out London Mayor Sadiq Khan, former Downing Street advisor Alistair Campbell and others for bringing attention to Emma Raducanu’s race after several tweets were posted addressing her ethnicity. Some viewers of Ms Raducanu’s victory chose to highlight the mixed-ethnicity of the tennis star to draw on diversity issues in the UK. But Ms Hartley-Brewer raged it was unneeded as those who were “obsessed” with Ms Raducanu’s race proclaimed to be pro-immigration before branding those commentators as “racists” for putting the tennis star’s heritage first and foremost.

Ms Hartley-Brewer took aim at those focusing on race issues rather than the tennis victory and said: “I woke up on Sunday morning to a whole string of tweets from the great and the good, on the left remoaner side.

“Who for some reason seemed to think that it was much more important to talk about Emma Raducanu’s heritage, her mixed-race background, and the fact that her parents were immigrants to this country.

“Rather than the fact that she was a young British woman who had done wonderfully well.”

The radio host then read out a selection of tweets from presenter Adil Ray, comedian David Schneider and others who attacked people who had issue with Ms Raducanu’s race.

A confused Ms Hartley-Brewer added: “Who was hating? Who was angry that she wasn’t born in Britain?

“Who was embarrassed that she wasn’t born in Britain, who was concerned or even cared where her parents were born or what their heritage was, she’s British.

“The only people who seem to be obsessed with heritage, obsessed with her identity, obsessed with race, obsessed with her parents not being from Britain are the people who proclaim to be so pro-immigrant and so open borders and say they’re colourblind.

“That they think that everyone else is sitting there constantly going ‘you don’t look Anglo Saxon’…

“People who are obsessed with other people’s race are racist, that’s what they are, they’re racist.

Alastair Campbell also tweeted: “Isn’t it great to be from a country where a child born in Canada to Romanian and Chinese parents can come to Britain aged two and become a Flag of United Kingdom national heroine within 16 years?

“Let’s try and keep the country that way shall we @pritipatel?”

Some have also tweeted saying Brexit may have prevented Ms Raducanu’s family from entering the UK if she was born later.

However, it was pointed out Romania had not joined the EU, and neither China nor Canada have never been members.

This means freedom of movement rules would not have applied to the family, meaning they would have had to apply for a visa just like third-country nationals do currently.

Ms Raducanu achieved a near-impossible feat as she became the first-ever qualifier to win a major title and the first in Open Era history to do it on just her second appearance at Grand Slam level.

The star won 20 successive sets over three weeks to lift the US Open trophy, ending a 44-year drought for British women at Grand Slam level.
