The UK is set for the hottest day of the year today as temperatures are predicted to peak at a scorching 25C. However, Britons can expect to swap ice-creams for umbrellas in the coming days as a wet-weather system closes in. A band of rain is on course to sweep northwards from Wednesday, with the threat of thunderstorms in the south east, according to the Met Office.
The latest precipitation maps produced by Netweather shows a shaded blue area of rain pushing eastwards from the Atlantic and over the UK and Ireland on Wednesday evening.
Heavy rainfall is poised to affect western areas of the UK, before gradually moving northwards as the evening progresses.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 20Cs during the early part of the week before cooling by Friday.
Netweather.TV forecaster Nick Finnis said: “Bank Holiday Monday will be another dry, warm sunny day and with a southeasterly breeze developing from a warm near continent, temperatures will be a degree or two higher too.
“Tuesday promises another warm and sunny day for most, however, Wednesday will see a breakdown of the fine weather, as an area of low pressure moves north from the Bay of Biscay across Ireland – spreading thundery showers northeast across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“Cooler and fresher from Thursday, with showers continuing to spread northeast across northern and eastern areas, drier and brighter in the south and west.
“Friday, for now, is indicated to see more in the way of cloud with showers affecting the north and west, dry and fine elsewhere.”
Becky Mitchell, a meteorologist from the Met Office, added the humid conditions is set to cause storms across the south east of England from the middle of the week.
She said: “There’s a chance of some thundery break down in the south east and we could have some quite intense storms there.
“There’s still a lot of uncertainty but with the warm and humid weather we are having we have the key ingredients for thunder storms.”
She continued: “The warmer weather will stick around until at least Thursday in most places, that’s when we could get some slightly fresher air coming in.”
