The Brit served out a 6-4 6-3 victory but not without some drama as she required a medical time out at 30-40, after scraping her knee and bleeding. She is the youngest British tennis player to reach the US Open final in the Open era, aged just 18.

In a personal message to the new US Tennis champion, Boris Johnson hailed Emma on the remarkable victory.

He wrote on Twitter: “What a sensational match!

“Huge congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu.

“You showed extraordinary skill, poise and guts and we are all hugely proud of you.”

Emma Raducanu did not drop a set through three qualifying matches and seven main-draw matches.

This is just her second Major appearance after Wimbledon this year.

She has become the first British woman to win a grand slam singles trophy since 1977, when Virginia Wade won Wimbledon.

Joining the Prime Minister in hailing Emma’s sensational victory, the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were all quick to congratulate the British sports star.

Emma started the tournament ranked at world No 150 but after this win will enter the top 25 of the rankings.
