Boris Johnson’s potential return as Prime Minister is the only way to save the Conservative Party, one close ally has suggested. Nile Gardiner, a foreign policy specialist and an adviser to former PM Margaret Thatcher, tweeted: “The future of the Conservative Party and Brexit itself is in peril with the unfolding political coup and crisis in Westminster.

“It was a huge mistake ousting @BorisJohnson in the first place.

“Boris’s return as PM may be the only way to sort out this monumental mess.”

Similarly, Government minister Sir James Duddridge said it was time for a comeback by Boris Johnson.

Tweeting with the hashtag #bringbackboris, he said: “I hope you enjoyed your holiday boss.

“Time to come back. Few issues at the office that need addressing.”

Sir James had served as a parliamentary private secretary to Mr Johnson when he was in No 10.

Bookies Ladbrokes has slashed Mr Johson’s odds of making a swift return from 20/1 to just 3/1, making him third-favourite after Rishi Sunak (5/6) and Penny Mordaunt (2/1).

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “In a shock twist, Boris Johnson’s odds of a return to Number 10 has drastically been slashed this afternoon.

“At this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him move into favourite spot before close of play today.”
