'I'm going to sleep': Haunting last text of girl, 17, who vanished 13 years ago

A schoolgirl who disappeared on holiday 13 years ago sent a final haunting text to her boyfriend which read: “I’m staying in packing and going to sleep probably.” In the hours that followed, 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel’s mobile phone received messages from her friends as they grew increasingly concerned. She would not respond and was never seen alive again.

Brittanee’s body was found in Harmony Township, South Carolina earlier this year, more than a decade after she disappeared from Myrtle Beach – on April 25, 2009.

The teenager was from Rochester, New York but had been staying at a hotel in Myrtle Beach with friends during spring break.

Last month, sex offender Raymond Moody pleaded guilty to kidnapping, raping and murdering Brittanee.

Brittanee’s remains were recovered a week after his arrest in May – around 33 miles from where she went missing in woodland.

New court documents, obtained by WCSC, show how she spent her final hours.

Brittanee had been walking between hotels in Myrtle Beach that night.

She initially texted her boyfriend, saying: “I’ll tell you later when you call me.. I’m so heated”.

In the hour before she vanished, Drexel also messaged her friend about a pair of shorts she had borrowed and made plans to meet her to return them.

The teenager also spoke to her friend about her outfit, including the teal and black shirt she was later seen wearing on a surveillance video at Blue Water Resort.

The last message she sent to her boyfriend, at 8.58pm, said: “I’m staying in packing and going to sleep probably.”

The records show that there were no other messages sent from her phone that night, causing her friends and boyfriend to become increasingly worried about her lack of response.

However, documents show her mobile phone continued to connect with cell towers in different locations, before dying at 11.57pm.

One message sent to her said: “Send me something we think ur [sic] missing”.

While another read: “Stop playing games.”

Investigators said that Moody kidnapped Brittanee in Myrtle Beach and took her to his house in Georgetown County.

There, he sexually assaulted and killed her before burying her body hours later.

Brittanee’s mother, Dawn Drexel, told local media last month: “For 13 years, I have searched for Brittanee, and for 13 years, I suffered the loss of a child.”

Moody was sentenced to life in prison on October 19.
