Issa Rae joins the cast of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel as Spider-Woman: ‘A dream come true’
Issa Rae will soon be slipping into the world of superheroes.
The Insecure star has been added to the cast of the sequel to the 2018 hit animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and will voice the role Jessica Drew, or otherwise known as Spider-Woman.
Rae, 36, called the upcoming role ‘a dream come true’ on her Instagram page on Friday, adding that she has ‘loved Spider-Man since the third grade.’

The actress joins original cast returnees Shameik Moore (Miles Morales/Spider-Man) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen), according to Variety.
The publication previously announced Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson will be directing the feature, with Phil Lord And Christopher Miller serving as producers and writers on the screenplay, along with David Callaham.
Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg are also producing, while one of the three directors of Spider-Verse, Peter Ramsay, will return an an executive producer with Aditya Sood.

Sony began developing the sequel before the original film was released in December 2018, with the storyline set to focus on the relationship between Morales and Stacy and feature an array of Spider-characters from the Marvel Comics’s storied history.
The original movie, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Film and became a pop culture sensation, grossed over $375 million worldwide against a $90 million budget.
Currently, Rae is shooting the fifth and final season of Insecure, the critically acclaimed HBO series that she co-created, co-wrote and stars in the leading role.
During its run since 2016 Rae has received two Golden Globe Award nominations and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her role as Issa Dee.

The Los Angeles native also serves as executive producer on A Black Lady Sketch Show, which just got picked up for a third season in May.
The sketch comedy show consists of comedic sketches performed by a main cast of Black women comedians, including creator and producer Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson in season one and Laci Mosley and Skye Townsend in season two.
The still untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse had originally been scheduled to be released in the U.S. in April 2022, but it was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is now set to hit theaters on October 7, 2022.
