Italy supporters took to Twitter to hit out at England fans for spitting on their flag and attempting to set it on fire. Footage emerged showing a group of England fans hours ahead of the Euro2020 kickoff trying to burn the Italian flag, with one member of the group yelling “f****ng burn it!’ As attempts to set the cloth alight failed, another fan could be seen spitting on the Italian flag whilst another stepped on it repeatedly.

Italian fans were raging after the video emerged, with one writing on Twitter: “What about those English fans who have started spitting and trampling the Italian flag?

“I’m disgusted, tell me the meaning of doing such a thing.”

Another wrote: “I’m seeing the worst in tl: the naked guys, the “fans” breaking through the security barriers to enter Wembley, the Italian flag trampled, the vandalism and the fights.

“I am disgusted. This is not cheering.”

One Italy supporter said: “Brits, welcome to the Italian blacklist along with French and Germans.

“They throw firecrackers, boo the anthems of their opponents, crush our flag with their feet. Disrespectful, you are beasts not men.”

And one said: “Spitting on your’s opponent’s flag…what’s your f****ng issue?!”

Another added: “I saw a video where the British step on the Italian flag. English enjoy your gray sky and bathe in the English Channel, and don’t dare to take a holiday in Italy.

Fans in Leicester Square were seen throwing bottles and cones and the area was left littered with rubbish.

Fans have been urged to stay safe and look after each other.

Police said there had been people “jumping off street lamps or hoardings” and warned “this could easily end in injury”.

Huge crowds of people have been in party mode outside the stadium and across London throughout the day, proudly sporting the team colours and draped in England flags.

But some boisterous supporters even climbed on top of a bus outside Wembley, while others outside King’s Cross station in the capital let off red and white smoke during the build-up.

British Transport Police said there had been “multiple cases of flares being set off within the vicinity of railway stations” in the capital and warned that “these incidents are offences and will be investigated”.
