Senior Cabinet Minister Michael Gove has confirmed the Prime Minister will not give in to Ms Sturgeon’s independence demands. Asked whether there was “any circumstance” in which Mr Johnson would approve a Scottish independence referendum before the May 2024 election, Mr Gove said: “I don’t think so.” And on whether his position was that “there will be no referendum before the 2024 election”, he said: “I can’t see it.”
The political hammer blow comes on the same night Scotland football fans were devastated to see their Euro 2020 dreams crushed.
Ms Sturgeon said she was “proud” of the Scotland team after they exited Euro 2020 following a defeat by Croatia.
Steve Clarke’s side lost 3-1 at Hampden on Tuesday to finish bottom of Group D.
First Minister Sturgeon tweeted: “Not to be, but thank you Scotland for taking us to our first men’s tournament in 23 years – you’ve played your hearts out and we’ve been proud to cheer you on”.
Meanwhile Mr Johnson celebrated England’s success in securing a place in the last 16 of Euro 2020 and offered his commiserations to Scotland.
After England’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic at Wembley, he tweeted: “Huge congratulations to England on finishing top of the group and joining Cymru in the last 16 of #Euro2020.
“Disappointing that Scotland couldn’t get the result they needed, but Steve Clarke and his players deserve huge credit.”
