Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto sign on for true crime thriller He Went That Way

Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto are teaming up to bring a bizarre true crime story to live in the new thriller He Went That Way.

Elordi, 23, and Quinto, 44, have both signed on to star in the project, which is being set up at the virtual Cannes market, according to Deadline.

The project is based on the true story of celebrity animal trainer Dave Pitts, his famous TV monkey Spanky, and their infamous run-in with a serial killer named Larry Lee Ranes.

Pitts had a three-day encounter with Ranes in 1964, when Pitts and Spanky were the centerpiece act of the traveling troupe The Ice Capades.

Ranes was the sole survivor of Ranes’ deadly killing spree, with the book based on Pitts’ actual account, and the 2016 book Luke Karamazov by Conrad Hillberry.

Quinto will play a character named Jim Goodwin, based on Pitts, while Elordi plays a character named Bobby Falls, based on Ranes.

The character Zippy the chimp, based on Spanky, will come to life through a mixture of a suited character actor and animatronics by Legacy Effects (The Shape of Water, Avengers: Infinity War).

Jeffrey Darling, a commercials director, will make his feature film debut with the project, working from a script by Evan M. Weiner (Monogamy).  

Marc Benardout, James Harris and Mark Lane are producing for Teashop Productions, alongside Hugh Broder and Jeremy Kotin, with Phil Hunt executive producing.

David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales for the project, which is eyeing a fall production start in California.

‘He Went That Way is a undoubtedly a journey of curious tensions and bonds between two and at times three interesting characters all on their own path,’ director Darling said in a statement.

‘A cinematic tale on the road across the U.S. in the early ’60s where people come with a rawness forged from the landscapes they inhabit. It is for our two leads Jacob and Zachary as well as myself, a great opportunity to explore with an improvised sensibility,’ the filmmaker added.

Mister Smith Entertainment’s Garrett added, ‘The screenplay is a heady mix of menacing, funny and emotional and, with Jeffrey’s incomparable visual genius, we anticipate this will be a unique and darkly thrilling road trip experience for audiences around the world.’

Elordi returns as Noah Flynn in Netflix’s highly-anticipated sequel The Kissing Booth 3, and he’s also returning as Nate Jacobs in Season 2 of Euphoria.

Quinto recently voiced Robot in Amazon’s critically-acclaimed animated series Invincible.
