James Valentine to replace popular radio duo Wendy Harmer and Robbie Buck on ABC Sydney Breakfast

Radio veteran James Valentine is set to replace Wendy Harmer and Robbie Buck on ABC Sydney Breakfast.

The 60-year-old musician will take over the breakfast shift from Monday, December 13, after an extended stint presenting the afternoon time slot.

‘I’ve loved presenting afternoons over the past 20 plus years and I know I’m going to love doing breakfast,’ Valentine told the outgoing hosts last week.

‘I can’t wait to have a shot at talking with Sydney at the start of each day,’ the saxophonist added.

Regular fill-in presenter Josh Szeps will take over James’ shift.

The reshuffle comes after two of the ABC’s most renowned radio presenters, Buck and Harmer, revealed they were stepping down from their roles.

The pair made the announcement earlier this month after four years of hosting the public broadcaster’s popular breakfast radio program together.

The duo said they planned to ‘go out on a high’ before their last show on December 10.

‘I hadn’t worked with Robbie but the decision to put us together on brekkie turned out to be inspired,’ Harmer, 65, said of her partnership with Buck, 49.

‘We’ve got to know each other at the same time as the audience and it has blossomed into a fabulous on-air partnership and a wonderful friendship too.’

Buck, who has been with the ABC for 25 years and was previously a host on youth station Triple J, shared Harmer’s sentiments as he announced their departure.

‘We always enjoyed each other’s company and I think that’s what’s made the partnership so good,’ he said.

Buck added that he will return to the national broadcaster in 2023 after taking some time off.

‘I now plan to take a year away from the mic and see the world. It’s not goodbye to the ABC.’

He explained on-air that the duo’s decision to step down had been made ‘quite a while ago’.
